As a brand new yogi, you may still be adjusting to the idea of being in a room full of people and stretching, breathing and sitting still. The idea of singing in a dead, foreign language, or chanting words that you can hardly pronounce and may not know the meaning of can seem altogether uninviting.
First, know that you never have to chant or sing. Second, know that you also don’t have to know how to chant, how to pronounce the words, or what their translated meaning is. In my first introduction to kirtan (aka intentional singing of yogic sutras in the Sanskrit language), my teacher explained that with practice, the voice and mind remember these songs and that even just listening offers a great value to us.
